The empty tomb

The empty tomb

written by Anne C. Avril, nds
“When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene,
and Mary the mother of James and Salome bought spices, so that they might go
and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had
risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another: Who will
roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb? When they looked up,
they saw that the stone had already been rolled back.” Mark 16,1-4
There is another stone which was
very heavy, it is the stone which was sealing up the well of Jacob.
“ As he looked he saw a well in the
field and three flocks of sheep lying beside it; for out of that well the
flocks were watered. The stone on the well’s mouth was large and when the flocks
were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone from the mouth of the
well, and water the sheep, and put the stone back on the mouth of the well”.Gn
29,1-3
A Jewish tradition says that several
men were necessary to roll up the stone so heavy it was.  And a miracle occurred and Jacob was able to
lift it up with his sole hand like the cork of a bottle. And the water went up
by itself up to the mouth of the well.”
The water, according to the same midrashis
referred to the water which was drawn at Siloe during the feast of Sukkot and
compared to the joy of the Holy Spirit
The well of Jacob is the well of the
Samaritan woman. She says: “ You don ‘have anything to draw water Are-you
greater than our father Jacob who gave us the well  and with his sons and his flocks drank from
it?” John 4

We do not have to appropriate too
easily those traditions, but to receive from Jacob  and all our ancestors
in faith the living water of the Word of God, and to let us be surprised by the
stone which jumps joyfully from the mouth of the tomb of Jesus to liberate
life, like the water  which spurts out from
a spring or goes up from the abyss of a well and quench our thirst with the
Holy Spirit and her joy.
