Sion Sisters go to Pilgrimage in Tunisia.
Pilgrimage to Djerba from May 1st to May 4th, by Sr. Agnès Perrin.
We spent 3 days in Djerba, an island located 531 km from Nabeul. It was on the occasion of the annual pilgrimage of Jews to Ghriba. They came from Europe, North Africa, Israel (400) and even Russia. They were around 5000. Their number has doubled compared to last year thanks to the security deployed throughout the region.
Also this year, on this occasion, on May 2 and 3, was held an international conference on the dialogue of religions and civilizations for the fight against terrorism and extremism.
It was a festive atmosphere in the small synagogue, one of the oldest in North Africa, related to the members of the Israelite priesthood to settle in Djerba after the destruction of the Temple of Solomon by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BC. They would have brought a door of the Temple and made it a place of pilgrimage.
At the end of the day, the scroll of the Torah was released and a procession took place in the neighbourhood.
During our stay, we met many different people. The young priest of Djerba, 36 years old, of Italian origin, arrived in September in this island. He is very close to the population. He speaks Arabic very well and even the day of the conference he spoke Arabic. He has in his discoveries of the island, found a tombstone of a Father of Sion, who was missionary in this area.
