The use of God’s name.

The use of God’s name.

On June 29, 2008, Cardinal Francis Arinze, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, sent a letter to bishops’ conferences on the use of God’s name (YHWH) in the Roman Catholic liturgical worship.

Reacting to the “new practice” to pronounce this name (which is avoided by the Jewish community), the prefect recalls that it should rather be translated into each language, as did the ancient translations in Greek (the Septuagint) and Latin (the Vulgate).
Although it is not directly addressed to the Jewish community, this directive can also be understood as a sign of respect for it, hence the need to bring it to the attention of the individuals and groups involved in the dialogue between Jews and Christians.
