Found Ring of Pontius Pilate near Jerusalem.

A ring discovered near Jerusalem was attributed to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who, according to biblical texts, condemned Jesus to be crucified. The object discovered fifty years ago in an excavation carries a “Pilatus” inscription in Greek letters, now revealed in recent analyzes by researchers, according to an article in the Israel Exploration Journal.

The ring, which served as a seal, may contain one of the few written references of Pontius Pilate of his time, says the Institute of Archeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The ring was discovered at Herodium, an ancient palace built in the time of King Herod, near Jerusalem and Bethlehem. The palace served as a fortress for the Jewish insurgents who rebelled against the Romans.

“To the extent that the inscription mentions Pilate, the first idea that comes to mind is that it is Pontius Pilate, governor of the Roman province of Judea, between the year 26 and 36 AD, in the time of Emperor Tiberius,” say the authors in the article.
