The Feast of Pentecost (homelie)

The Feast of Pentecost (homelie)

by Sr. Anne-Catherine AVRIL, nds

I like the two biblical mountains, Mount
Sinai and Mount Zion. The one where Israel received God’s particular
revelation, with the covenant and the gift of the Torah, and the other where
all the Nations are to gather in order to receive the same Torah, the Word of
the Lord, and this in a context of universal peace (cf. Is 2:1-5 and Mic
4:1-5).
It is not by chance that the Acts of the
Apostles tells of the gift of the Spirit on the day of the Jewish Pentecost
(Shavuot) and that Christian Tradition locates this gift of the Spirit on Mount
Zion. For the Spirit is the One who universalizes the Revelation made to
Israel, to all the nations of the world, and it is also the Spirit who enables
us to understand God’s Word.

The Torah received at Mount Sinai will go
forth from Zion and on this same mountain the Spirit will be received and will
send the disciples forth into the whole world.
Zion is the mountain from which the Law
goes forth, and from which the Spirit flows. From this same patriarchal
mountain came the Apostles and Mary herself
.     P. Theodore
These two mountains do not exclude one
another. Zion cannot be understood without Sinai and Sinai finds its
fulfillment in Zion. This is true already in the Holy Scriptures and it is
confirmed by Christian Revelation. The gift of the Spirit on Pentecost day
cannot stand without either the biblical Zion or Sinai.
And this is not all. There is also the new
Jerusalem, which is also Zion. It comes down from Heaven, from God (cf. Rev
21). Jews and Nations together, we never cease to draw near to this Zion, to
this Jerusalem, to this city of the living God (cf. Heb 12:18-24). And
meanwhile, as we await this day, the Spirit and the Spouse  cry out: Marana tha, come Lord Jesus.
Zion is the place where Israel and the
Nations are gathered.
P. Theodore
So let us thank the Lord who, at Zion,
allows us to embrace all these stages of the history of salvation, to make its
dynamism our own, to pass from Sinai to Zion, and always to return from Zion to
Sinai, in order to continue receiving from God’s people the Torah and the
Spirit of the Lord who renews all things.
In Ezek 11:16 we read: I will be for you
a “mikdashme’at”, a small temple
, we could say a temple “in miniature”.
We can also be a Jerusalem, a Mount Zion
”in miniature”.
After absorbing the Word of God so deeply,
after letting the Spirit enable us to understand it, so that the Torah goes
forth  from our lives and the Spirit
flows forth from us like from a spring.

Both visions of Micah and Isaiah end with a
beautiful description of universal peace. May
the Spirit and the Spouse cry out and call peace upon our world, upon
this land that we love, upon the two peoples who dwell in it.
